General Description

This family consists of ssRNA viruses that infect animals and which have small (<5kb) bipartite genomes. The name is derived from the Japanese town (Nodamura) where the best known member was first isolated.

Morphology

Virions isometric (icosahedral), not enveloped, 29-32 nm in diameter without any distinctive surface struture.

Genome

Bipartite positive sense single-stranded RNA without 3'-polyA tails. The non-structural proteins are encoded on RNA1 and the coat protein precursor on RNA2.
