General Description

This genus in the family Partitiviridae consists of a single species of virus that infects protozoa. The coat protein is substantially smaller than those of viruses in other genera of the family. It is named after the type (and only) species Cryptosporidium parvum virus 1.

Morphology

Virions isometric (icosahedral), not enveloped, about 30 nm in diameter.

Genome

Linear, double stranded RNA of two segments, approximately 1.8 and 1.4 kb.

Genus Genomic Organization

The segments are monocistronic: RNA1 encodes RNA polymerase and RNA2 the coat protein.
