Notes on Genus: Pegivirus
Type member: Pegivirus A
This is one of the genera in the family Flaviviridae
and consists of those viruses with a genome of <10kb that appears not to encode a core protein. All members of the genus described to date share an ability to persist in their natural hosts and lack any identified pathogenicity.The name is from “Pe” for persistent and “g” for “G” virus, referring to the historical names of the constituent viruses, GB virus and hepatitis G virus.
Virions enveloped and spherical about 40-60 nm in diameter. Mature virions contain two virus-encoded membrane proteins ( E1 and E2).
Monopartite positive sense single-stranded RNA 9.0-9.5 kb in length, with no 3'-polyA tail.

There is a single polyprotein of 310-340 kDa that is subsequently processed into a number of structural and non-structural proteins.
