General Description

This family currently consists of the single genus Iflavirus. These viruses are phylogenetically distinct members of the picornavirus "superfamily" and infect insects.

Morphology

Virions isometric (icosahedral), not enveloped 30 nm in diameter.

Genomen

Monopartite, linear, positive sense single-stranded RNA of 8.5-10 kb. The RNA encodes a single polyprotein of 330-350 kDa that is subsequently processed into the functional products. The 3 (or sometimes 4) coat proteins are encoded near the N-terminus. There is a genome-linked protein (VPg) at the 5'-terminus and a 3'-polyA tail.
