General Description

This family includes viruses of fungi that have a single-stranded RNA genome and no true virions. The genomes are associated with their RNA-dependent RNA polymerases to form ribonucleoprotein complexes.

Morphology

There are no virions.

Genomen

Monopartite, linear, single stranded DNA of 2.3-3.6 kb. There is one large reading frame encoding an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Genera in the Family

  • Mitovirus (associated with mitochondria and usually causing hypovirulence in their fungus hosts)
  • Narnavirus (cytoplasmic parasites of yeast with no phenotypic effects)
