Contents

General Description

This is one of the genera in the family Microviridae. Members infect infect epsilon-purple bacteria (Bdellovibrio species).

Morphology

Virions isometric (icosahedral), not enveloped, 26-32 nm in diameter with small surface projections.

Genome

Monopartite, positive sense, circular ssDNA about 5 kb in length.

Genus Genomic Organization

Only Bdellovibrio phage phiMH2K has been sequenced and this has 6 closely spaced major ORFs, with up to 5 other minor ORFs identified by computer prediction which may or may not be expressed:
ORFkDaNote
160.1Major coat protein P1
221.5VP2
316.9VP3
49.6VP5
54.4Putative DNA binding protein
637.2VP4

The five minor ORFs identified are nested within the others: Z (7.5 kDa), Y (7.2 kDa), X (8.0 kDa), W (5.9 kDa) and N (12.0 kDa).
