Notes on Genus: Giardiavirus
Type member: Giardia lamblia virus
This genus contains those members of the family Totiviridae
that infect protozoa of the genus Giardia
and which have particles 36nm in diameter. The name is derived from the genus infected by the type member.
Virions isometric, 36 nm in diameter.
Monopartite, linear, double stranded DNA of about 6300 base pairs.
Genus Genomic Organization
The genome has two large, overlapping ORFs on the positive strand that encode respectively the coat protein (gag) and polymerase (pol).
Type Member Genomic Organization
There are two large, overlapping ORFs on the positive strand:
|1. ||98 kDa||Coat protein (gag)|
|2. || 120 kDa||Polymerase (pol): RNA-dependent RNA polymerase expressed as a fusion protein with gag by a -1 ribosomal frameshift |
