General Description

This is one of the genera in the family Anelloviridae and contains viruses of Tupaia (tree shrew) with a small genome of 2.2 kb. The genus name is partly derived from the latin torques, for necklace which reflects the circular nature of the genome.

Morphology

Virions isometric (icosahedral), not enveloped, 19-27 nm in diameter.

Monopartite circular single-stranded DNA of 2.2 kb.

Genus Genomic Organization

There are two major overlapping ORFs encoding a replication-associated protein and a (larger) coat protein. Further products may also be generated by splicing of an intron.

There are two major overlapping ORFs:
  • ORF1: 59 kDa, Coat protein
  • ORF2: 7 kDa, Replication protein (a protein of about 24 kDa may also be generated by splicing of an intron)
